Garmin Forerunner 620 Benefits
This watch is absolutely geared toward a runner who wants that extra edge in their training. If you are looking at this watch you want to know details of your cadence, pace alerts, distance alerts, auto laps (set it at a mile) and you will like the race advisory feature to help predict your times. Let’s break down the main benefits of this watch that is different than the other models like the forerunner 220.
Helps Your running Form: The 620 has a feature called the HRM-Run monitor. This technology uses multiple running metrics to help give you feedback on your running form. It has the cadence feature which tracks how many steps you take per minute, which is your left and right foot combined.
Very important to for long distance running. Traditionally, shorter strides or more steps per minute will be easier on your legs or have less of an impact on your quads. Longer strides, mean a longer distance and more impact when hitting the ground. So, using this can help reduce your leg fatigue if used correctly.
Vertical Oscillation: This is a feature that measures your bounce in your running technique and is measure in centimeters.
Contact time: Lastly, you have the feature that tracks how long your foot is on the ground during each time you foot hits the ground and is tracked in milliseconds.
The 620 uses these 3 features to compare your running dynamics to others and visually displays it on the screen using it’s color gauge. I would personally use the data in the garmin connect software to monitor how I do for various distances.
The next feature is the VO2 maximum oxygen consumption estimator. This is a pretty cool feature that can be one more metric that you can use to see how well you are progressing in your training. It is of course not as accurate as a regular VO2 test where you are hooked up to a mask and tubes but it’s accurate enough to watch your progress to see if you are gaining ground.
You have to use the heart rate monitor in order for this feature to work. The 620 will keep track of your beats per minute, pace you are running and your heart rate pattern to estimate what your VO2 max would be. So, this comes out in a measurement of maximum volume of oxygen that you can use per minute per kg of your own body weight. Extremely important for endurance athletes. The higher your VO2 max the harder you can go without your muscles getting full of lactic acid.
Recovery Adviser is a feature that analyzes your workout data during your run and when completed keeps track of how long it takes you to recover. If you wear the watch on a daily basis, it continues to analyze your heart rate and recovery. It recommends if you are good to run again but showing green and red if your body is still showing signs of not being recovered yet.
Ride – Run – Race Feature – Ok, there are basically 3 modes you can put the watch in. Ride is for cycling which puts it in speed mode vs having it in pace mode. Run is the basic training mode for running. The race feature is for race day to have different metrics to display so that you are only focusing on what counts during the race.
The customer reviews are all over the place for this watch. You definitely see comments from people who like it better than the 610 which was the previous model. I also saw where people love the touch screen version of it. As with any gps watch there are always complaints about satellite signals. This one just makes me laugh most of the time. You always see a comment about it doesn’t work under tree covers. I’m like really man, how can the signal get through fully. So, that is typical.
I have seen people comment that it can take a bit to find the satellites initially. That is pretty standard. I just turn my watch on while I’m getting ready so it has plenty of time to dial itself in. Once guy made a great comment, which was to set the timeout mode to extended so you give it plenty of time to connect. He was very pleased with this setting as his marathon run accuracy was within 1 percent!
The watch itself is pretty awesome. I’m a bit worried though that it is a 2014 model. With a watch like this you would want to see some firmware updates to it since then as it’s now late in 2015. Despite that give this watch a go and make sure you use it right away and get a feel for it. If you don’t like it you can always return it. I believe the run window is small so make sure you read the fine print. You can find it on amazon for the best discounted price here and to read more reviews.
